The '98 Colorado Hunt
In
October of 1998, Zumbo and I headed out west to Colorado to hunt elk.
It was probably the best trip I ever took, and it was also the very worst
trip I ever took. Everything about
it was great “except” that the 5 mile hike to camp with an 80 pound pack was
incredibly difficult, and to make things worse, my boots rubbed my heels ,
caused blisters, and made walking torture.
(The boots STILL bother me to this day, but I’m too cheap to buy a new
pair…) We made it, and luckily we
found a group of hunters from Wittenberg nearby that let us rent their horses to
get the rest of our provisions and to pack back out.
If they hadn’t been there, the trip would have been really bad…
The road trip there and back wasn’t bad at all… about 21 hours… The views were incredible, the area pristine, and the fishing and hunting fabulous! Zumbo scored on Sunday (Big Surprise!) but I saw more elk. We missed out on a really nice one on Monday. The tenderloin we cooked up was amazing. I will never try to make a trip like that again, but I’d go back if we had horses… If I ever have enough money again…
Be sure to check out Zumbo’s carving. On a previous trip to the area with Jungle, he had carved a picture of a whitetail into a tree. We found it again and got it on camera. Just shows you Zumbo is more than just an amazing outdoorsman…
Thanks for the trip of a lifetime Zumbo!
